Born in Wayne County, Ohio, the daughter of Elijah S. and Eva (Griffith) Adams. In the mid 1840's, following the deaths of her parents she moved with her brothers to Elkhart County, Indiana. She was a school teacher and taught school near Goshen, Indiana. It was here she met her future husband. She and Joseph Bigelow Middleton were married on May 11, 1845, by Eventus Dodd, a Methodist Episcopal Minister. They had six children, of which two died as infants. Sarah died July 7, 1856 and was buried in the Old Goshen cemetery. She was survived by her husband and four children.
