Harold Patterson was the eldest child of Frederick Robert Patterson and Lottie LaVada Morrison.

Harold attended schools in Fremont, Ohio, graduating from Fremont Ross High School in 1919. He worked for the Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Company in Steubenville. On October 6, 1937 in Steubenville, Ohio, Harold married Lena B. Barnes. Harold and Lena had no children.
