Virginia Austad Perucca Etherington
OGDEN - Virginia Perucca Etherington, age 90, passed away Wednesday, 24 Dec. 2003. She was born 31 Oct. 1913 in Logan, Cache, Utah to Robert Christian Jacobson Austad and Dora Marie Wilkes. She lived in Logan until she was about 1 year old and then moved to Saint Charles, Idaho for a brief period before moving to West Ogden. They lived there until she was about 7 and then the family moved to Huntsville to live on a ranch. Virginia, though only 7 going on 8 at the time, had to help her mother cook all the meals for all the ranch hands. She used to tell of peeling potatoes for long periods of time EVERY day for the meals. After about 4 years, her dad took ill and died shortly after. Her mother and brothers stayed at the ranch for another 2 years. Virginia and her brothers would go and gather wool from the fences and bring it in to be made into quilts and woolen clothing.
Her mother got a job in Ogden at the Model Laundry and also got Virginia a job. Though Virginia was too young to work, she looked older than her age and so they said she was older than she was in order to get a job and help with the family finances. She later got a job at Scowcrofts. It was while working at Scowcrofts she met Nicholas Perucca. According to Virginia, he was the handsomest man she had ever met. They fell in love and eloped on 16 April 1930. He later was baptized into the Church. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 30 Jan 1946. They were the parents of 4 children, James Robert, Gerald Nicholas, Albert John and Barbara Virginia Johnson. After Nicholas died Virginia moved her family back to Ogden.
She met LaDell B. Etherington through a friend and they were later married on 7 May 1949. In later years she and LaDell enjoyed serving in the Ogden Temple.
After working for Commercial Security Bank for many years,Virginia sold real estate for a short period of time then went to work for IRS and later retired from there.
Virginia loved animals and had a dog most of her adult life. She and LaDell raised Chihuahuas and she got a little companion Chihuahua, "Poco". He was her constant companion and "ears" until her death.
She lived in her own home until shortly after her 87th birthday. After 87 years she finally needed to move to an assisted living facility.
She still stayed quite active, going on little trips with the group to the Conference Center and to the airport to air shows and out on boats.
She always loved to read and learn.
She is survived by her four children; 19 grandchildren; 53 great- grandchildren, and 4 great-great- grandchildren.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Washington House Assisted Living and IHC Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 29, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836 36th St., Ogden, where family and friends may call Monday, one hour prior to services.
Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
