When a tower of strength falls, angels come out of nowhere to pick her up.
Heather Ray believed that with all her heart from the day, 28 years ago, when she lost her left leg to cancer until Wednesday, when she lost her life, but not her spirit, to the disease.
The 41-year-old Symmes Township mother of two - six-year-old Madison Sweeney and four-year-old Mackenzie Sweeney - beat the odds by beating cancer four times.
Every time, her "angels," her daughters, her parents, her brother, his wife and her friends, rallied to keep up her spirits.
They helped her weather numerous operations and chemotherapy sessions.
They biked and walked with her - she once ran a 10-K race on crutches - as she tirelessly raised money for cancer research.
In 2008 and 2009, she was Greater Cincinnati's top individual fund raiser for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. An avid stationary spinning bike rider, she served in October, when her cancer was in remission, as the spokesperson for the Fourth Annual Spin for the Cure at Xavier University's Cintas Center.
"She was spinning for the whole four hours," said Vickie Magliano, founder of the fund raiser for breast cancer research.
"When others felt tired, I told them to look at Heather," Magliano said. "She was on that bike and riding and smiling and was doing it with just one leg."
Ms. Ray's family and friends wholeheartedly supported her in all of these evens. And, she returned their favors by inspiring them to set goals and reach them.
"She took strength from people and gave it to others," recalled her brother, Steven Ray of Anderson Township.
"She helped us organize our lives and gave us her gift of inspiration that will last forever."
