Martha Ann Ray (née Keller) passed away on September 25, 2021. She was born on August 27, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Frank and Ruth Keller. Martha was a devoted partner to her husband, Neil Calvin Ray, (Col. USAF, ret.) and a loving mother to their son, Steven Ray (Kathy), and daughter, Heather Ray, who died in 2010. She was a doting Grandmom to Kristine van Treeck (Josh), David Reed (Miriam), Christian Ray, Madison Sweeney, and Mackenzie Sweeney – and Great-Grandmom to Colton, Carter, Elliott, Eden, and Cecilia. She nurtured close relationships her entire life with her brother, Dale Keller, and her sister, Bettye Ettare, and their families. Family reunions were hilarious and spawned legendary stories that often involved tap dancing, water battles, impromptu singing, and sinking boats. And love. Always abundant love.
Martha graduated from Bethany College in 1960 with a teaching degree, and she taught middle-school children. That year, she married Ronald Hutter, who died the next year while Martha was pregnant. Soon after, as a young, widowed mother, she met Neil, an Air Force pilot, and the two began their life-long love affair. They married in 1964 in Lindsborg, Kansas. Over the following 2½ decades, she embraced the military lifestyle as one great adventure, despite its challenges and frequent relocations – a total of 18! Together, they raised their two children and overcame numerous trials, including Neil's two combat tours in Vietnam and Heather's childhood cancer.
Everywhere she lived, Martha pursued her intense passion for reading, learning, and painting. She took courses in cooking, real estate, religion, and post-graduate studies in five states. As a member of the League of Women Voters, Martha worked for women's rights and supported the Equal Rights Amendment. In 1984, she became a librarian for Fairfax County. Four years later, she earned her Master of Library Science from The Catholic University of America. She progressed rapidly from reference librarian to branch manager of one the county's largest libraries with 60 employees. She retired in 2001. Seven years later, she and Neil moved to Cincinnati to be closer to children and grandchildren. Martha then rekindled her love of painting, took lessons from talented local artists, and created beautiful still-life watercolors and mixed-media collages.
Family and friends will dearly miss Martha – her easy laugh, her caring leadership, and her boundless love. On Monday, October 4, at 11:30 am, Martha's family will hold a Celebration-of-Life Service at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 1950 Nagel Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45255. In lieu of any flowers, please donate to Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, or Hospice of Cincinnati.
