Charles was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Kingsport, where he served in many capacities, among them, singing in the Sanctuary Choir, Sounds of Joy Choir, doing volunteer work as longtime active member of Carpenters' Helpers, and providing mentoring for families relocating from Africa and Russia.

He also served as an officer for Tri-Cities Regional Ostomy Association for 23 years. He was a previous member of First Baptist Church for 25 years, where he was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, deacon, and did other volunteer work.

In 1995, Charles began writing a book of his memoirs entitled "No Need: Memories of a Life," published in 1997.

Charles spent his youth in Thomasville, Ga., where he attended Thomasville High School. He graduated in 1942 from Berry College in Rome, Ga., with a BS degree in chemistry. During his college years, Charles sang in college choirs and did some music composing.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945, serving as an engineering officer (Lt.). At the end of World War II, he assumed command of the USPCS 1383 prior to being honorably discharged in December 1945.

In 1946, he received an MS degree in chemistry from Emory University. In 1947, Charles accepted a job with Eastman Kodak as a chemist where he remained for 35 years, retiring from Tennessee Eastman Company in 1982.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was very devoted to his family. Charles was known to be kind and friendly to all people, always seeking to help anyone in need, always looking at the bright side and kept a song in his heart.
