The family reunited, possibly at the mining community of Carbon, Wyoming, then went to the Pendleton, Oregon area where they farmed for several years. In 1896, they and several other Finnish families, traveled by wagon train to Long Valley, Idaho. He and his family were among the first European settlers in Long Valley. The family homesteaded there near Roseberry.
Matt married Fannie L. Walman of Centerville, Washington on May 1, 1902. Their children Wilfred and Alice were born in Washington State. He served in World War I, and afterward, he and his family moved to Fairfield, Idaho, where he was a farmer for most of his remaining life.
He died at Byrne Veteran's Hospital in Boise.
He had "Americanized" his name by changing his surname from Koskela to Costella prior to 1910.
