Harry Brous was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Jasher and Josephine Brous, and came to Pottawatomie County, Kansas as a boy about 1858. He attended the Kansas State Agricultural College at Manhattan and graduated in 1874. While wanting to become a doctor, he collected insects and fossils in western Kansas with Professor B.F. Mudge and fellow student / future paleontologist, Samuel W. Williston. Williston's recollection of some of their adventures in the chalk beds of western Kansas is recorded in Elizabeth Noble Shor's book, "Fossils and Flies – The Life of a Compleat Scientist – Samuel Wendell Williston (1851-1918)."
Brous graduated with his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia in the class of 1877-78.
In the graduating class of 203, Brous was the only student from Kansas. The subject of his thesis was Malarial fever.
Brous set up his medical practice at 521 Vine Street in that city. Married in 1897, he returned to Manhattan, Kansas in 1900 and was living with his elderly parents in the 1900 Census. He practiced medicine in Manhattan, KS until his death on May 10, 1906 at the age of 55.
