Rhoda Sheldon was born on 13 Jan 1793 (date from her Bible) in Rupert, Bennington, Vermont. Rhoda was the 11th of 12 children born to Joel Sheldon and his wife Mary (Hanchett) Sheldon. She was granddaughter to Daniel Sheldon who served in the Revolutionary War.
Rhoda grew up in the family home in Rupert, Vermont. At the age of 19 on 20 Dec 1812 she married Nelson Abel Phelps (date from her Bible). By 1820 they were probably located in western New York in Ontario County. In 1830 they were in Genesee County. About 1836 they moved to Westfield, Chautauqua County, New York where they settled.
Nelson and Rhoda (Sheldon) Phelps had three children:
* Mary Sheldon Phelps b. 18 Sept 1814.
* Lorenzo Frazier Phelps b. 8 Aug 1816
* Eliza Ann Marinda Phelps b. 8 Oct 1826
Mary Sheldon Phelps married Marquis L Goodeno and moved to Chatham, Ontario, Canada. She died in 1842.
Lorenzo Frazier Phelps married Mary Cornelia Dustin (descendant of the famous Hannah Dustin of Haverhill). They remained in Westfield.
Eliza Ann (or possibly Elizaan) Phelps married William C Avery. She died on 19 Aug 1846. It is possible but unconfirmed at this time that they had two children.
Rhoda (Sheldon) Phelps died on March 27,1867 in Westfield, New York.
