He was a 2nd lieutenant in the US Army during World War I. In France he was aide de camp to General's GH Shelton and CR Edwards. He participated in the Le Reine sector, Chateau Thierry, Marne-Aisne offensive, Saint-Mihiel offensive, Troyon sector, Meuse-Argonne offensive and Neptune sector. He resigned on August 8, 1919.

Following the war he became an Investment Banker and Partner at GMP Murphy & Co. in New York City.
