BERNIE HAMPTON, 87, EX-MAYOR SUCCUMBS

Bernie F. Hampton, 87, of 3385 N. Clare Ave. , Harrison died on May 25 at the Clare Nursing Home.

He was born on April 6,m 1888, in Clare county, the son of Isaac and Nellie Johnston Hampton.

Mr. Hampton had lived in Clare County all of his life. He was united in marriage to Lucina M. Stanley on April 30, 1909 in Clare county.

He lived on a farm in Sheridan Township for 10 years, moving to Harrison in 1919 to take over the Ford Agency, continuing in that business for 22 years.

Mr. Hampton was elected as State Representative from Clare and Osceola Districts, serving in that office for 4 years and as Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives the following 2 years.

Bernie also served 18 years on the City Council of Harrison, two years of that time as Mayor of the City.
Bernie was a life member of the John J. Carton Lodge No. 436, F&AM Royal Arch Masons and also life member of the Order of Eastern Stars No. 408.


He was also honored as Senior Citizens of the Harrison Community. In 1945, he became active in the real estate business, owning and operating Hampton's Real Estate, until his retirement several years ago.

Surviving are his wife, Lucina, one daughter, Mrs. Emory P. (Kathleen) Wall, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 29, at 1:00 p.m. from Coker Funeral Home, Harrison, with the Rev. Carl Gillett officiating.

Masonic Memorial services were conducted Wednesday evening at 8:00 p.m. under the auspices of the John J. Carton Masonic Lodge of Harrison. Interment was in the Cherry Grove Cemetery, Clare. (The Clare Sentinel, p. 1 – Clare, MI – 28 May 1975)
