He emigrated as a passenger on the Barque Ellen, which departed Loch Laxford, Sutherland, Scotland, on 22 May 1848 and arrived at Pictou, Nova Scotia, on 30 Jun 1848. He and his family along with other passengers (including the Gunns) then traveled to Prince Edward Island and settled in South Granville.
