Flossie Leighton Perkins, 98, of Pittsburg, KS, died at 11:45 a.m., Sunday, March 11, 2012, at the Vintage Place in Pittsburg, KS. She was born Flossie May Leighton on May 24, 1913, near Bloomington, KS, to Ernest D. Leighton and Ida E. Katzel. She lived on a farm until her father's death in 1924. The family then moved to Osborne, KS, where she graduated from high school. She attended Fort Hays State College and taught elementary school in Osborne County. On June 3, 1935, she married Ralph Perkins of Goodland, KS. To this union, three children were born: Larry, Gail and Don. Flossie attended Kansas University and earned a B.S. in Education. She taught elementary school for several years before attending Denver University and earning a M.S. in Library Science. She taught Library Science at North Dakota University. Flossie and Ralph retired in 1972, and moved to Pittsburg, KS. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pittsburg. She was a volunteer at Wesley House, Mt. Carmel Auxiliary, and the Doggie Bag. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents; and sister Opal Roadhouse. Survivors include children: Larry Perkins and Bron Jones of North Liberty, IA; Gail and Dave Williams of Rexford, KS; Don and Wanda Perkins of Pittsburg, KS; 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, and nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday (March 16) at the Brenner Mortuary with Rev. Jim Akins officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m., Thursday to sign the register book. The family suggests memorials to the S.E.K. Humane Society. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Online condolences may also be left at www.brennermortuary.com.
