Thelma Blanche Gregory Doak , 103, was born on a farm in Mt. Ayr Township near Alton, Kansas on September 20, 1908 to Carey E. & Edna E. Crutchfield Gregory. She was born on the same farm where her father was born, which was homesteaded by her grandfather. She departed this life on March 1, 2012 in Jurupa Valley, California. She graduated from Alton Rural High School and attended Kansas State Teachers College in Hays, Kansas for two years to earn a State Teachers Certificate. Blanche taught school for 11 years in Kansas, four years were in a one room country school with 13 students teaching all subjects. The next seven she taught kindergarten and first grade in the Osborne City Schools. Blanche moved to California in 1941 working at Victorville AFB, Norton AFB, then a satellite US Postal Office in the old Sage's store. In May 1945, she married the love of her life, Wesley (Wes) T. Doak, a Santa Fe Railroad Signalman and relocated to Ludlow, CA. where they made their home in two converted railroad boxcars. In 1951, they moved to Colton and Blanche started a 22 year career as an accounts payable accountant, working in the Highland City Schools that later consolidated with the San Bernardino City Schools. She retired from the District Business Office in San Bernardino in October 1973. After Wes's retirement in 1975, they enjoyed traveling in their motor home and camping with family and friends. Blanche was an avid reader and most any book was reading material, but loved the murder mysteries. She was also a sports fan and enjoyed watching and cheering on the Dodgers, Angels and Lakers. In June 1981 they sold their Colton home and moved to Redlands where they always had flower gardens, big vegetable gardens and fruit trees. She sold her home and moved in Riverside in 1998. Blanche is succeeded in death by her parents, 1 brother, 1 sister and husband Wes of 44 years. She is survived by her sister Clara Scheckle of Kansas, nieces Edna (Del) Campbell of Riverside, Vivian (Ellsworth) Brown, of Kansas, nephews Ralph (Donna) Williams of Kansas, Roy (Carol Ann) Williams of Kansas, and Steve (Deborah) Bechtold of Missouri and many loving grand nieces and nephews. Graveside services are scheduled for Friday, March 16, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Montecito Memorial Park, Angeles Oaks Urn Garden located at 3520 E. Washington St., Colton, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
