The family of George and Lucy Davis were talented musicians, and John hand-made violins for the family. John served in the U.S. Army and worked for over 20 years for the Milwaukee Road Railroad He died at the age of 69, had never married, and had major complications from diabetes. He lived his last 3 years at the Grand Army Home for Veterans.
