Maria was the daughter of (unknown) Lugo and (unknown) Dominguez. Orphaned, she was raised by her uncle, Juan Salvador Lugo y Sur and his Indian neophyte wife, Maria Josepha Francisca Espinoza.

1774: Left Sinaloa with husband as members of Capt Riveras expedition to Alta California. First child born at Oso Flaco, and baptised at Mission San Luis Obispo in Nov, arrived Monterey with husband and child. Marie Northrup: Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California 1769-1850, Vol I. Mission San Luis Obispo Baptisms entry #86.

1790 California Mission Census: Taken from the "Revillagigedo Census of 1793," and that the data was originally collected in 1790 w/ husband and 11 children.
