John Isaac Friesen Sr., 85, of Russell, died Friday, May 8, 1992 at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Feb. 15, 1907 in Inman, KS, the son of John C. and Helena (Bergman) Friesen. He grew up in the Inman area. He met and married Mable Johnson on Oct. 23, 1928. He was drafted into the Army and served with the First Cavalry division in New Guinea. After his discharge in 1946, he moved to Russell where he operated a Skelley Service Station with his brother, Carl, and then they opened up the Friesen Sporting Goods Store. He loved bird hunting, especially quail and was an enthusiastic supporter of wildlife conservation.

He was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Masonic Lodge #177, Russell Shriners, American Legion Post #99, VFW Post #6240, the Elks Lodge, all of Russell and the Isis Temple of Salina.

To cherish his memories are four sons: Eugene of Dallas, TX; John Jr. of Wichita, KS; Don of Tallahassee, FL; and Del of Platie City, MO. Two sisters, Esther Beutler of Hemet, CA; Nell Clark of Yuma, AZ; and one brother, Carl of Russell; eleven grandchildren and eleven gt. grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mable.

Memorials are to the St. John Lutheran Church where the funeral was held on May 11, 1992 with Rev. Michael Fibranz officiating. Burial in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell, KS.
