Carl Cornelius Friesen, the son of John C. and Helena (Bergman) Friesen, was born May 22, 1911, in McPherson Co., KS. His death occurred on Feb. 21, 1995, at Russell Regional Hospital after several months of failing health. His age was 83 years, 8 months, and 29 days.

Carl lived his early life in the McPherson area, moved of Russell in 1936, He worked for Skelly Oil Co. He married Gladys L. Dole Jan. 7, 1938, at Gt. Bend. To this union was born four children: Peggy, Steven, Connie, and Terri.

In 1946, he and his brother, John, were owners of a service station located at the corner of Maple St. and Hwy. 40. They later added the Army Surplus Store to his business in the buildings west of the service station. In the early 1960s, they constructed a new building and moved their business, known as Friesen Sporting Goods to their location east of Russell on Hwy 40. They operated this business until they sold the business and he retired in 1976.

Carl was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a life member of Elks Lodge, both of Russell, and Kansas Trap Shooting Assoc. and won numerous state and national events. Carl was an avid sportsman and was always available to help the young people with their Hunter Safety Courses and in general helping all sportsmen become informed about wildlife in our area.

Survivors include his wife Gladys, of the home in Russell; one son, Steven Friesen and his wife Karen of Barrington, IL; three daughters, Peggy Barringer and husband Steve of Victoria, TX; Connie Krug and her husband Monte of Russell; and Terry McKown and her husband Ron of Valley Center; two sisters, Nell Clark of Yuma, AZ; and Esther Beutler of Hemet, CA; 8 grandchildren: Kim Hamilton, Kelly Buckler, Kirk Barringer; Jason and Justin Friesen; Trent and Tad Krug; and Todd McKown; 1 step- grandchild, Megan Tole; 7 gt. grandchildren: Brandee, Brent, Bradley, Brice, Steven, Davis, and Kyle; 1 step gt.grandchild, Casey; a number of other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, including John Friesen his business partner; and five sisters.
