A lifelong resident of Russell, she was baptized and confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church, graduated from the Russell High School, took teachers training at Hays, Kansas, and taught rural Russell County schools for several years. On June 28, 1922 she was united in marriage to Herbert Deines, also of Russell. There were three children, Shirley, Ramona and Ramola.
