Born in Grange, Fifeshire, Scotland. Veteran of Revolutionary War, service with 14th Albany Co (NY) State Militia, later with 3rd Reg't Tryon County Militia. Participated in the 1782 capture of John Parker, famous Tory spy, who was later executed. Resided in Town of Locke in his later years. Shortly after his burial, on July 31, 1833, a massive rainstorm and subsequent flooding carried away caskets from 16 graves downstream in Dry Creek, including that of Amos Bennett.
