Donald Murray was born near Wick, Scotland, on March 23, 1844, and came to the US in 1867, living first in Menominee, MI until 1874, when he came to Wausau and became superintendent of Ely Wright's business, Wausau Iron Works, manufacturing mill machinery and general foundry work. The business was first organized under the name of Wright & Murray.
In 1881, the D.J. Murray Manufacturing Company was organized after Donald acquired the interests of the old firm and enlarging the scope of the business to include the manufacture of all types of sawmill machinery. In 1884, the entire plant burned to the ground, but confidently, Mr. Murray immediately rebuilt what became an even larger and more modern facility.
In March 1921, Mr. Murray disposed of his interests in the company to a group of Wausau investors and ended his business career. He remained affiliated with several of the Masonic orders, being one of the oldest members of Forest Lodge #130, F&AM, Wausau chapter, #51, R.A.M., and St. Omer Commandery, #19, Knights Templar, and the Shriners of Milwaukee.
Mr. Murray was married in Dundas, MN on May 24, 1871 to Ellen R. Van Alstine, originally from Lower Canada. Their marriage gave them three children.
Donald J. Murray died on December 13, 1933 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
