FARMER SUICIDE SUNDAY MORNING AT GRAND ISLAND
Very sad cicumstances surrounded the death of John Elvis Starnater, Grand Island farmer yesterday morning, his dead body having been found hanging in the barn upon the return of a son who had gone for the mail leaving his father, apparently in the bestspirits, at home.
Mrs. Starnater and another son had left earlier in the morning to visit West Butte and after their departure, Starnater requested his other son, Burnell, to go for the mail and the morning paper. The son demurred, as he had been instructed by his mother to look after his father, but upon the latter insisting the young man sat out upon the last errand for his father.
He returned to the farm some little time later and found the following note pinned on the dining room table. "You will find me in the barn make your own plans for the future."
The son rushed to the barn and found that his father had thrown a lasso over a rafter in the barn and had tied the other end to a manger. It appeared as though he had mounted a nearby ladder and jumped from it to the ground as his feet were just clear of the flooring of the barn.
Young Starnater called up H. L. Houchins of Grimes, an old friend of the family and he hurried to the scene with Dick Kilgore and the body was cut down life then being extinct.
The victim of the tragedy was 63 years of age and was native of Indiana, having been a resident of California for the past 36 years. He was highly respected by the community where he resided and the taking of his life was the last thing his friends thought he would do. He is survived by his widow and two sons.
The body is at the McNary Funeral Parlor and the funeral will take place tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the McNary Chapel, with internment at Grand Island [The Colusa Daily Sun, Monday August 31, 1925].
