Painter & Tavern-keeper in Baltimore. Baltimore City Sheriff 1851-1853.
Little is known of his ancestry. Much of the family materials belonging to his son, Benjamin, were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis shortly before they were to be sent to California in the 1850s. A letter discussing the family history from Sr. Restituta written in the 1870s is missing from one of Benjamin Hayes diaries in the Huntington Libary. Perhaps it will turn up. From a Census record John Hayes was born in Virginia.
