Education: Ph.B., Univ. of Michigan, 1877; LL.B., Univ of Wis., 1883; LL.D., Univ. of Ill., 1907; Sc.D. Univ. of Mich, 1907; admitted to the bar but never practiced.

He was assistant engineer on the U.S. Lake Survey and improvement on the Mississippi River; prof. of math and astronomy at Ohio State.
