Col. Ephraim Blaine, Sr., of Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA, was a friend of Pres. George Washington's and was the commissary general of purchases for the northern district of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He was an officer and had earlier served as a member of the Committee of Observation of Cumberland Co. In 1794, during the Whiskey Rebellion, he hosted Washington for a week at his home in Carlisle. Ephraim was married twice: to Rebecca Galbraith in 1765 and to Sarah Elizabeth Postlethwaite Duncan in 1797. His granddaughter, Rebecca Blaine, who was the daughter of son Robert Blaine and Anna Susanna Metzger, married Rev. Jeremiah Chamberlain, D. D., of Adams Co., in Carlisle in 1818. Ephraim Blaine was a trustee of Dickinson College, in Carlisle, from 1792 until his death in 1804. He was also the great grandfather of James G. Blaine, the Republican presidential candidate in 1884. Reportedly buried at Cave Middlesex.
