María Petra Celestina Pico y Bernal was born at Santa Clara, Alta California, México, May 20, 1841, and was baptized there May 23, 1841 (SCL Baptisms 10139, ECPP). She was the daughter of Antonio María Pico y Cota and María Ludgarda Pilar Bernal y Sánchez. She became a citizen with the transfer of sovereignty in 1848. She married Dr. Vincent Gelcich at Santa Clara December 19, 1863. Her husband and her brother, José Ramón Pico y Bernal, both served in the Native California Cavalry during the Civil War. She appears in the 1870 Census at their Los Angeles home where she is living with her husband Vincent and house guest Native Cavalry veteran Carlos (Charles) Moreau. Petra died at their San José home and was buried in the Pico family crypt at Santa Clara.

In this city, April 18, María Petra Selestina [sic] Pico, beloved wife of Dr. Gelcich, of Los Ángeles died at age 38 years and 12 days [sic]. The funeral of the late Mrs. Dr. Gelcich, who resided at No. 330 Hayes Street, will take place from St. Joseph's Church, H Street, between Howard and Folsom, today at 8 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. After the services, the remains will be taken to Santa Clara to be buried in the family vault.
