Joan was the daughter of William de Ferrieres, 5th Earl of Derby and Sibyl Marshal, daughter of William Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke and Isabel de Clare.
Joan first married Sir John I de Mohun of Dunster, son of Reynold (Reginald) II de Mohun Lord of Dunster and Hawise or Avice Fitzgeoffrey.
Joan also married Sir Robert de Aguillon of Watton & Perching, son of Sir Robert de Aguillon of Watton & Addington and Margaret (Margery).
