Fred was raised in a two-story brick farm home on Barnes Road, North Branch, Michigan, where his dad raised crops and dairy cattle. He and younger brother, Bill, soon learned farming and, as a young man, he began working for another farm family, the Sohns, as a hired hand, assisting them with their chores, as well.

Fred and Liz met at a dance at Miller's Lake, a place that was a popular dance spot in Lapeer County during the 1940's. However, they didn't begin dating until sometime later. When shy Fred saw Liz again - this time at a farm sale - his buddies belittled him for not asking her for a date. Finally, a few days later, he saw her at church, seized the opportunity, and she accepted.

During his senior years, Fred waged a battle against prostate cancer. After undergoing forty radiation treatments and, with the grace of God, he emerged victorious. Later, he was afflicted with Parkinson's, but continued to maintain his cheerful disposition through it all.

Fred and Liz made their latest home on Banker Street, in North Branch, not far from the shopping district and their church. Their marriage lasted almost 62 years. At the time of his death, besides three loving children, God had blest them with eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Anyone who knew Fred admired and respected him. He was always good-natured and his manners were that of a perfect gentleman.
