Mr. Corliss Eugene Gilbert, Sr. was born on February 7, 1922 in Dexter, Georgia to E. E. Gilbert and Eloise Kemp Gilbert. Known as Gene Gilbert he served in the U. S. Army for a 6 year period during World War II. He graduated from Mercer University after the war and went on to law school where he was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1949. He married Sallie Lee Dyal in 1947 and they had four children. Mr. Gilbert practiced law in the Atlanta area for 57 years with the last 20 years in Roswell. He was still working and at his office on his 84th birthday this year. Mr. Gilbert transitioned to Heaven on Tuesday, October 24th at his home. He considered himself a "dirt road country lawyer". He never lost the country upbringing that he loved so much. Over his career he never once charged a client by the hour saying that the large firms did that and he didn't know how to keep up with it. He kept a back room full of candy where he surprised the children of his clients by telling them to "take all you want." He was truly thrilled to see the excitement in these children's eyes with most of them being from poor families. Mr. Gilbert was a devout Christian and a devoted Father. He was known and admired for his wonderful personality and hard work ethic. Retirement was not for him as his Roswell office was just a couple of miles from his Roswell residence. He worked 5 and days a week for 57years. One of 10 children he was preceded in death by sisters Eula Waites, Katie Lee Gay, Jean Minor and Evelyn Gilbert Montford as well as brothers G. H. Gilbert, Milton Gilbert and M. E. "Buck" Gilbert. He is survived by his brothers Jack Gilbert and Phil Gilbert of Macon and also by his children Cynthia Phillips , Gene Gilbert, Jr., Deborah White and Mike Gilbert as well as his beloved grandchildren Curtis Phillips, Jr., Chelsea Phillips, Chanel Phillips, Amanda Gilbert, Andrew Gilbert and Cody White, III.
