She was born in Hartford City on October 9, 1915, the daughter of Harry and Lola Rogers. She moved to Muncie as a teenager where she met her future husband while working in Barney's Soda Shoppe in the Hotel Roberts. Mr. Thornburg opened a tailor shop in that same hotel. The marrired on June 15, 1934 and were together for 64 years until his death in 1998.
Bernice retired from Ball State University in 1970 as Dining Service Secretary and Bookkeeper in the Student Center. She was a member of High Street United Methodist Church and a former member of the Elks Country Club.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband, playing bridge with friends, golfing, reading, shopping, working crossword puzzles, and just being with her family.
She leaves behind her daughter, Sandra Simmons (husband-Fred) of Muncie; two granddaughters, Karen Conwell (husband-Kreg) of Losantville, and Pam Robbins (husband-Kevin) of Springport; two great-grandchildren, Traci Robbins and Lee Robbins (wife-Karen); and two great-great-grandchildren, Michelle and Mogan Robbins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald E. Thornburg; a sister, Freda Rutherford; and three nephews, Gary Borson, John Borson, and Ronald Rogers.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
