Joe was most likely born in Kershaw County, SC, but his family moved soon after his birth to Abbeville County. He later lived in Anderson, SC with his recently widowed sister, Eliza Burford, and worked at Sullivan Hardware Co. in the plumbing department. On Sunday morning, Sept. 7, 1913, he was severely injured while trying to hop a moving passenger train in Anderson, was taken to the hospital to have his leg amputated, but died soon after the operation.
