On Dec. 1, 1850 on the S.S. Prince Albert, John immigrated with his mother, a brother-in-law who died on the voyage, four sisters and three children. With no work available to the many immigrants in NY, John found a job in Chicago near his sister Anne who had come earlier and was working as a maid. The two sent money back to NY.
He fell ill of cholera during the 1851 epidemic and was nursed back to health by Anne, who also nursed many others. However, she succumed to the disease herself.
John pursued his religious calling, was ordained 1855 in the Evangelical Association of North America and served for over 36 years. In his second year, riding a horse, he served a preaching circuit that covered five counties in the rural area around Peru, IL. He eventually served many charges in No. Illinois and in Iowa. He was repeatedly elected presiding elder to the General Conferences. 1872/3 he was secretary/ treasurer of the Northwestern College at Naperville, IL, in addition to duties as pastor. He was appointed Chicago District Superintendent in 1876. At death, his appointed charge was the Deerfield, IL Evangelical Church.
On April 26, 1856 in Henry Co. IL he married Magdalena Rapp, daughter of John and Catherine Rapp. They had five sons, three of whom predeceased him.
In the obituary, his dear friend Bishop Rudolph Dubs wrote: The Illinois Conference has lost ...its ablest ...and most faithful preacher. His services to the conference were inestimable. Few brethren may realize this... Our church has lost one of its worthiest and most faithful sons and workers. God grand others may follow his godly example.
