Sixth of eight children of Johannes Schneider (1797-1847) & Katharina Elisabetha Angst (1788-1885), Phoeba immigrated to New York on the Prince Albert with her mother and most of her siblings on Dec. 1, 1850.

She married Heinrich Schenk, a farmer, and had three children before he died in 1862 in Wheeling, IL. The spelling of this family name was later changed to SHANK. A son, Rueben Schenk, died about 1862.
