The son of Jacob and Philippine "Phoebe" Schneider Schenk ZAHN, he studied at Chicago Homeopathic Medical College and practiced medicine at Roberts and Chicago, where he treated his extended family and the community. He retired to Oak Park, Illinois.

He married Lydia M. Forkel on March 27, 1895 in Chicago.
