US Representative from Pennsylvania. He was a member of the State house of representatives in 1813 and served in the State senate in 1814. Elected as a Democrat to the Seventeenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Cox Ellis and served from October 9, 1821, to March 3, 1823. He declined to be a candidate for renomination and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death in the East Chillisquaque Township. His cousin John Murray, was also a US Representative from Pennsylvania.
