Born in Pitt County and was by
occupation a student when he
enlisted in Lenoir County, NC at
age 22, May 13, 1862 in the 5th
Regiment N.C. Calvary. Mustered
in as a Private and appointed
Sergeant July 8, 1862. Promoted
to 1st Sgt /Sept 16,1863. Present
or acct'ed for through Dec, 1864.
It is probable that he was
promoted to Lieutenant in the
last months of the war.
Spelling of the Wooten/Wootten
name is unsettled in the family.
I was asked by a family member
to spell it with one "t" and I
have honored that request.
Out of 18 items on Edward from
the National Archives collection
everyone spells his name with one
"t". There is also one Signature
for reimbursement of expenses that
has his signature dated Dec 25,
1863 spelled with one "t".
