Foster 'Bob' Bacon, 79, LeRoy native

Foster Eugene "Bob" Bacon, 79, of Neodesha, Kans., died from complications of muscle myopathy at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kans., on Jan. 5, 2001.

He was born on Jan. 21, 1921, in LeRoy, Minn., to Frank and Viota (Perdue) Bacon. (One relatives obituary states there were 16 children, 10 boys and 6 girls).

He graduated from Spring Valley High School, where he was All State in football and basketball. He attended the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship, leaving to help fight World War II in the Army Air Corps. He played football for the Army and ferried B-17s and B-29s from the West Coast to the East. He was a member of the American Legion and was a Top Sergeant.

He married Evelyn Elizabeth "Betty" Deer in 1940. He was president of Bob Bacon Real Estate and Insurance Agency for 50 years. He served in the Neodesha National Guard, which was activated during the Korean Conflict. He was co-chairman and later treasurer of Neodesha Industries, attracting new industry to Neodesha. He was chairman of the Neodesha Housing Authority and a board member of the First National Bank since the 1950s. He was past president of the Neodesha Metro Club, past president of the Lions Club and past president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a real estate broker and a past member of the Kansas Real Estate Board. He was a member of the American Legion and a former member of the Masonic Lodge. He was an outstanding golfer and was a member of the Independence Country Club for many years.

He is survived by his wife of Neodesha; a son, Richard J., of Golden, Colo.; a daughter, Julie S. Bacon of Kansas City; two grandsons, Brent Bacon of Denver, Colo., and John Bacon of Golden, Colo.; two brothers, Laverne of Dilworth, Minn., and Donald of Mesa, Ariz.; and three sisters, Frances Bacon, Lavonne Walters and Evelyn Strain of Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held at the Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church in Neodesha on Jan. 10, followed by graveside services with military rites by the United States Army from Fort Riley at the Neodesha Cemetery.

Loran Fawcett Funeral Home in Neodesha was in charge of arrangements.
