The exact date of Jerry's death is not recorded, but it appears in the winter of 1873 when he was 29, he may have died due to pneumonia. His wife Ruth was expecting their third child, and he rode out in the rain to get a doctor. He perhaps became chilled from getting wet, and took pneumonia and died quickly. The child also died, and was buried in the arms of the father. He was buried at Sardis Cemetery, near Sparkman. His grave is unmarked.
