Stephen F. Spaulding was the son of Peter Spaulding Jr. and Lucy P. Larned. His maternal grandfather was Daniel Larned. Stephen's paternal grandparents were Peter Spaulding Sr. and Tamar Bartlett.

Peter Spaulding Sr. was born on 10 June 1769 in Townsend, Massachusetts and died on 26 October 1858 at Montague.

Stephen Spaulding married Ella S. Fay on 1 May 1860.

On 18 September 1861 Stephen enlisted in the Army. He was assigned to Company K, Massachusetts 26th Infantry Regiment on 23 October 1861. Stephen mustered out on 7 November 1864. As his brother Frederick had been wounded, Stephen was also wounded but survived. His brother Frederick died of his wound.
