When he was young he worked in mines as a coal miner but later served as county mine inspector and the State of Illinois as a mine inspector. He was a good musician and played the violin. His death followed the death of his wife closely.
Surviving children are, William A. Rutledge, E.E. Rutledge, Ella Rutledge, J.J. Rutledge, Mrs. Zeb Labelle and Herbert W. Rutledge (Herbert of Washington D.C.).
