Son of Elisabeth Culp and Levi Marcellus. Name is mostly found as John E. rather than John I. He served in the Civil War in Company B, 39th Illinois Infantry during 1864-1865.

JOHN E. MARCELLUS DEAD

John E. Marcellus, 82, died at 7:30 o'clock Thursday evening at his home, 209 East street. He had been a resident of Emporia for 37 years. Mr. Marcellus was born in Zanesville, Ohio, on April 12, 1846.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Marcellus, 209 East street, two daughters, Mrs. Nettie Crow, of Kansas City, Kan., and Mrs. Effie Eudaley, of Emporia, and by one son, Floyd Marcellus, of Denver, Colo. Two brothers, J. S. Marcellus, of Emporia, and A. J. Marcellus, of Foosland, Ill., and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie McCullough, of Idaho, and Mrs. Maggie Roberts, of Mountain Grove, Mo., also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Christian church in Emporia. Interment will be made in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Funeral services for John E. Marcellus, who died Thursday evening at his home, 209 East, were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Christian church. Rev. D. F. Cross, pastor of the church, had charge of the services, assisted by Rev. W.D. McMullen, pastor of the Free Methodist. Interment was made in the Forest Hills cemetery, six miles east of Emporia.

Mr. Marcellus had been a resident of Emporia for 37 years. He was born at Zanesville, Ohio on April 12, 1846 and moved to Bloomington, Ill., in 1855 with his parents. At the outbreak of the Civil war, he enlisted with the 39th Illinois Infantry with his father, and brother, J. S. Marcellus. He was discharged in 1865 because of poor health.

In 1868 he was married to Miss Lyda Whitsler. Two children were born, one dying in infancy. Mrs. Marcellus died in 1871.

In 1872, Mr. Marcellus was married to Miss Elizabeth Land at Paola, Kan. To this union six children were born, four dying in infancy.
