Funeral services for Richard L. Adams Sr., 79, of 916 Gobin Drive, Carlisle, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in First United Methodist Church, 64 E. North St., Carlisle.

He died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 in Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

Born March 29, 1922 in Carlisle, the son of the late Leroy and Emma Ruth Nickel Adams, he was a retired employee of the former Mechanicsburg Naval Supply Depot. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the European theatre, he taught civil defense following the war and first aid for the American Red Cross for more than 30 years.

Involved with the Boy Scouts for 50 years, he was active with Troop 160, Carlisle and received the Silver Beaver Award.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president of the Carlisle Sunday School Association, vice president of Cumberland County Sunday School Association, a past board member of the state Sunday School Association, and a member of Cumberland Star Lodge 197 F&AM, St. John's Commandery 8, St. John's Council 5, St. John's Royal Arch Chapter 171, Gobin Guard Association, all of Carlisle, the National Association for Retired Federal Employees and vice president of its Carlisle Chapter 8373.

Mr. Adams is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Ferril Adams; a son, Richard L. Jr. at home; a sister, Ruth Ann Blumanstock of Carlisle; a brother, Clyde of Gladewater, Texas; and a grandson.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Lee, a sister, Virginia Baker, and three brothers, Lee K., Ross M. and Bob.

The Rev. John L. Shellenberger Jr. will officiate at services. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, West Pennsboro Township.
