Granite Falls - Joe Sidney Church, 77, died Thursday afternoon in a Hickory hospital after suffering a sudden attack at his home on Rt. 3, Granite Falls.
Born Aug. 24, 1902 in Ashe County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Ellen Greer Church. Church retired after operating the Rhodhiss Food Center for 33 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Rhodhiss, where he had served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. The Revs. James D. Cool, E. Guy Longshore and R. F. Mayberry will conduct the funeral service at the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Surviving are his wife, the former Thelma Branch; a son, the Rev. Joe Bill Chirch of Valdese; a daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Rebecca) Sigmon of Hudson; five grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. James Triplett and Mrs. Paul Hanner of Granite Falls and Mattie Johnson of Charlotte.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Rhodhiss and designated for mission work.
Pallbearers will be Randy Bumgarner, Steve Martinet, Jim Bragden, John David Church, Michael Sigmon and Stephen Sigmon. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the First Baptist Church of Rhodhiss and members of Church's Sunday school class.
