James Hamilton Bailey, the fourth born son of James Robert Bailey and Elizabeth Dixon, like his brothers David, John, and Uriah before him ~ was born in Georgia. The family moved to Logan County, Kentucky, shortly after his birth where his twin siblings Wm.L. & Elizabeth were born in 1816. They then moved on through Indiana and Vermilion County, Illinois, before settling in Green County, Wisconsin.

He was first married to Nancy Kelley in Vermilion County, Illinois, on the 20th of November 1834. She bore him a son, Francis M. Bailey, on the day after Christmas 1835, but did not live to see him grow to maturity. After her death in 1838, J. H., and his small son, came with the rest of the Bailey family to Green County, Wisconsin, where on the 1st of August 1839, he married Miss Sarah Brown.

To them were born eleven children: Margaret C. (1840), Elizabeth J. (1842) married Henry W. DeVoe who died in 1864; Endamile (1844) married J.VanBuren Shafer; Maria (1847), James H. Bailey, Jr. (1849), Harriet (1852) married Almon H. Johnson; Lucinda (1855); George F. Bailey born in February of 1857 married Caroline A. Holtz; Alfred T. 1859-1865 died young; Ida (1862), and Sarah Selia born abt 1865 according to the Census.

James Hamilton Bailey served in the Black Hawks Wars and died at home in Monroe at the age of 68yrs 3mo 9ds.

His father, Pvt. James Robert Bailey of Maryland, aged 91 years was residing with them in 1850. He had served as a wagoner in the Revolutionary War and is buried in Shook's Prairie Cemetery, Adams Twp, Green County, Wisconsin with a handsome gravestone dedicated and memorialized by the DAR.
