Robert Clark was the son of Jesse Clark and Lucy Willis. He he enlisted in the 15th Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteers on March 29, 1813, under the command of Col Wm. Dudley. In May, 1813, while Gen. Proctor was besieging Port Meigs on the Maumee River near Lake Erie, Ohio, Col. Dudley with 800 Kentucky Militia, descended on the rapids and surprised the British. driving them from their battery and spiking their guns. But, too elated by success to enter the fort as they were ordered to do, they pursued the enemy for nearly two miles into the woods and swamps and were finally surrounded and captured. This action of the War of 1812 was afterwards called "Dudley's Defeat". Robert Clark was captured but was released and was discharged on the 7th of February, 1814, at Richmond, Kentucky.

Robert married Rhoda Fox in 1818. They were the parents of nine children. In the early 1830s, the family moved to Cooper County, Missouri. Robert was a carpenter and a farmer.
