Not much is known about Emery Bissell, except he grieved the death of his first wife, Ann Johnson, in January of 1864, and then again with the death of his son, Henry, seven months later. Within another few months, he married widow Susanna Knowles Wass Emerson.

According to records of his second wife, his name was J. Emery Bissell. It is reversed on this record, as there is no other documentation of the initial.

Emery supported his family as a peddler selling his wares around the state, and on 1 Jul 1833, he was disciplined by his church for "haying with his father on the Sabbath" and behaving too lightheartedly for a Christian.
