At the age of eight he moved to the country with his parents, where he spent four years, and from there to Middle Grove where he worked in a tobacco factory, and also worked in the country. On October 16th, 1864, he enlisted in the Confederate Army under General Price and spent 8 months and 8 days in the service. At the close of the war, he took up the trade of wagonmaker, working in Renich and Moberly. In 1881, he came to Meadville and opened up a shop.
On November 9th, 1882, he was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Jane Snell of Middle Grove, Mo. To this union five children were born, two preceding him in death, a son and a daughter. He was converted and united with the Christian church when a young man and continued living a Christian life until the end. He was honest and upright with all his dealings, a kind husband and father, a good neighbor and friend.
He is survived by his widow and the following children: Mrs. Laura Patterson of Laclede, Mo., Mrs. Marcie Sallee of Meadville, Mo., and W. K. VanArsdall of West Chicago, Ill. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. J. M. Settle of New Franklin, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the home, conducted by Rev. J. W. Trower, pastor of the Baptist church. The funeral was attended by a large crowd of neighbors and friends, after which the body was laid to rest in the Meadville cemetery."
