The son of two Irish immigrants, Will was born in McCracken County, Kentucky. The 1870 United States Census of McCracken County indicates that he was born in January, 1870. He began serving as a stationman with the Paducah Fire Department about 1899. Two articles in the Paducah Evening Sun reported that he was a well-liked, popular young man.
On November 14, 1905, the Paducah Sun reported that he had suddenly moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Within a few years, however, he contracted tuberculosis, a disease which, in the early 1900's, often proved fatal.
He traveled to Covington, Kentucky, to find relatives, but did not succeed. He was taken in by the Little Sisters of the Poor, a nursing home operated by the Catholic Church.
After his death, Paducah firefighters raised money to have the body returned to Paducah, for funeral and burial, because he wanted to be buried near relatives in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
