Mary is a daughter of Joseph Clough Hustler and Emma Mary Powell - the third child of their eleven children. Her older brother and sister both died as infants leaving Mary to be the oldest of her siblings. All of the other children were born in England. Mary was born in Pennsylvania during her parents' short stay there. They returned to England after her birth and Mary grew up there in Yorkshire.

The last Census Mary shows on in England is 1901. She is 18 years old living in her parents' home in Yorkshire (West Riding). The family immigrated to Utah in 1903. Mary married John Bell Bennett on February 15, 1905 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They became parents to six children: Clarence, Lyndon, Leslie, Stanley, Marcelene, and Elaine.

John died in 1946. Mary stayed in Provo for a few years eventually moving to her daughter's home in Midvale, Utah.
