Born in South Hadley, MA, he attended Holyoke schools and later studied architecture at MIT. He left the states to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and returned to Massachusetts in the late 1890's. He opened an architectural practice with William E. Putnam, Jr and together they won the competition to redesign the Boston Athenaeum. The firm, based in Boston, designed several libraries, houses, and commercial buildings. Mr. Cox died in 1944 at the age of 77.
